Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling
and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position
and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit. It
promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and
proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger,
stronger assailant.
Classes are usually split on two segments - the first focusing on learning
new techniques from the instructor and then practing them with a partner,
and the second segment "rolling" or live sparring where one can practice
learned techniques in a combat situation. Emphasis is placed on propper
technique. Tae
Kwon Do
Taekwondo
is known for its use of kicking techniques. The rationale is that the leg
is the longest and strongest weapon a martial artist has, and kicks thus
have the greatest potential to execute powerful strikes without successful
retaliation. Taekwondo develops strength, speed, balance, flexibility, and
stamina. An example of the union of mental and physical discipline is the
breaking of boards, which requires both physical mastery of the technique
and the concentration to focus one's strength.
Aikido
Aikido
is primarily a grappling art in which attacks are neutralised with various
types of throws or joint locks. Aikido techniques are intended to be implemented
after first blending with the motion of the attacker, so that the defender
may redirect the attacker's momentum without directly opposing it, thus
using minimum effort.
Judo
Judo,
meaning "gentle way", is a modern Japanese martial art and combat
sport. The object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize
or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force
an opponent to submit by joint locking the elbow or applying a choke.
Kicks, punches, and thrusts are taught in Judo, but not allowed in judo
competition or free practice.
Tai
Chi
Tai
chi chuan is Chinese martial art applied with internal power. Considered
a soft style martial art, it is practiced with the aim of promoting health
and longevity. Tai Chi's training slow motion forms are well known as
groups of people practice together every morning in parks around the world.
Cardio
Kickboxing
Cardio
Kickboxing is an intense aerobic workout utilizing using kickboxing techniques
which provide both resistance and cardio vascular benefits. Authentic
kickboxing techniques are taught utilizing conventional heavy bags and
training pads. This program is the real deal - and not to be confused
with the watered-down and diluted programs found at local fitness clubs.
The program is run by the top kick-boxing instructor in NJ.
